THE Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) on Tuesday paid glowing tributes to the memory of its past president, Mr Emmanuel Ijewere.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the late Ijewere, who passed on Dec. 28, 2023, was a distinguished chartered accountant, boardroom guru, tax consultant and farmer.
He was the past president of the CIoD, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Accounting Bodies of West Africa and the Past Pioneer Vice-President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation.
Alhaji Tijjani Borodo, President, CIoD, noted that the late sixth CIoD President, ensured that the corporate visibility of the Institute was significantly enhanced.
This, he said, placed the Institute on a pedestal as the premier membership organisation in Nigeria.
Borodo said the late Ijewere was also the inaugural Chairman, Independent Directors Register Committee, where he played a pivotal role in ensuring the success, growth, and development of the Register.
“Today, the Register stands as one of the Institute’s value-adding services to the Nigerian business community, a testament to his foresigh and dedication,” he said.
He said until his demise, the late accountant was also the Chairman of the College of Past President and Elders and had contributed immensely to ensuring that the Institute’s peace and stability was never compromised.
“The Institute will miss this great man, whose passion and selfless service to the CloD Nigeria is unparalleled.
“His commitment to the ethos of the Institute was an inspiration to all members of CloD Nigeria.
“We take solace in the fact that he lived a life of dedication to professionalism and ethical business practices.
“As we mourn our revered Past President Ijewere, we will continue to cherish his selfless services and commitment to the cause of the Institute.
“We pray that his wonderful soul will find rest in the bosom of the Lord and that God will grant the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” he said.
Otunba Tunji Oyebanji, First Vice President, CIoD, said the late Ijewere impressed him very well as a well respected chartered accountant and a boardroom guru.
Oyebanji said he made the meetings very lively with his uncanny ability to tackle even the most serious of issues in a very light and jovial manner.
“He was a reservoir of knowledge about the institute having been one of the foundation members.
“In his final months as he battled with the scourge of sickness, he displayed unrivalled courage in facing his challenges head on.
“When we visited him, he ended up lifting our spirits rather than making us sad. He fought until the end and faced his health challenges with faith in a manner that was an inspiration to all of us. He will be sorely missed.
“I join our President, Council and all members to pray for the repose of his soul and ask that God Almighty receives him to eternal glory,” he said.
The immediate past President of the institute, Dr Ije Jidenma, said his exit created a great vacuum that was hard to fill in the nation.
Jidenma said he was prodigious in his leadership qualities, saying wherever, he was, they were unhidden and shone like bright stars.
“Also, being a great and tested professional of global repute and having reached the
height of professional practice in the accountancy profession, you etched your stamp undeniably on expertise, authenticity
and courage, proving that indigenous firms can indeed hold on their own.
“You were a man of many paths; always striving to serve, to lead and to follow, provided the right things were done and the right atmosphere was created.
“We, the members of the Chartered Institute of Directors will forever be grateful to you and would never forget that you led through trials and triumphs; through victories and conquests.
“Our collective task, is to ensure that all the candles that are lit would continue to burn, shine brightly and we shall continue to light more candles in our spheres of influence so that they can turn into a conflagration that is unquenchable. This is our promise,” she said.(NAN)
