Chris Okigbo: The Spirit Of Ideoto
Africa
THE moonlight was serenading with it’s allure
The ldeoto River with its aquatic splendour sings
The northeast trade wind playing eternal sonorous music
With Elders gathered around a jar of fresh palm wine
So the dusty town of Ojoto heralded the birth of a Prince
Albeit joyous mood, they named him Chris
Christopher being handsome went after his beauty-education
Educated,young and restless
He sought for adventure
With a pipe in his mouth,he set out with faith
The ominous signs in Nigeria openly beckons
He saw the country of rising sun
In a twinkle of an eye,Biafra was born
Chris’ books, glasses and pens were forsaken
He picked up guns and bullets
Bullets which he fondly called groundnuts
With groundnuts and guns
He went into romance with his cherished country
His belief was as constant as beauty of ideoto River
He fought his way to the war front
Patriotically and fearlessly he trudged on
Like a virgin searching for a man he was betrothed to
He soldiered on buoyed by the love of his country-Biafra
Till he was caught down by staccato of bullets
To dim the fire of love in his eyes that glowed
Thence Chris with a smile on his face proclaimed
“It is over”
A gallant Biafran
He went to be with his forebears
Laughing at cowards who didn’t see his hope
Please Christ,l pray thee
Give us another Chris
Tito Chigor
For his posthumous birthday
A.
