THE Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Cross River has urged personnel of the command to be responsive, professionalism and discipline in the discharge of their duties.
The state Commandant of the Corps, Samuel Fadeyi, gave the charge while addressing officers and men of the command on the International Civil Defence Day on Wednesday in Calabar.
He said that these attributes would endear the service and its personnel to the public and government.
He said that NSCDC was celebrating the day because the service is affiliated to the International Civil Defence Organisation, Switzerland.
He said that the objective of the day was to sensitise residents on their functions which include disaster management, prevention and control and enhancing peace and security in the country.
He said that the theme for the 2023 celebration is: The Role of Information Technology in Risk Assessment’’.
He explained that the world over, people were embracing Information Technology as a means of assessing risk from a distance.
He noted that the 2023 anniversary of the day was coming at a time that the command had deployed its personnel for election duties, hence the low-key celebration.
“My advice to our men on this day is that they should remain professional and disciplined; they should always remember the motto of our service which is “Defending the Defenceless”.
“We must continue to maintain our relationship with the civil populace and follow the best way of policing that is internationally acceptable,” he said.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that over 10 suspects were arrested during the Feb. 25 elections across the state for violence at various polling units.
According to him, the suspects were handed over to the police for onward investigations and possible prosecution.
Fadeyi said that the command has yet to record post-election violence, adding that a joint security team was stationed at strategic points within Calabar metropolis to forestall any breach of public peace.
