AN Enugu-based renowned Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abdul Ishola, has called on political leaders and office holders to fulfill electioneering promises made to the people.

Ishola, the Chief Missioner of Islamic Centre, Uwani in Enugu State, made the call while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Tuesday.

He noted that fulfillment of electioneering promises would deepen the political participation and trust of the people to governance.

“Our leaders especially the political leaders must live up to all promises made and ensure they are kept to achieve harmony and increase political participation.

“Leaders should do the right things and promote the right values among the people.

“They should first think of the people they are leading; while shunning all acts of selfishness, which leads to self-centeredness and focus on family and cronies alone’’, he said.

On the ongoing Ramadan, the cleric said that `as the Ramadan is gradually coming to end, Muslim Ummahs (faithful) were expected to spread the spirit of love by giving.

“It will not end by giving Zakkat as instructed.

“But also ensuring that people around feel the import of sacrifice of giving especially giving to the needy,’’ he said. (NAN)
