Clerics call for ethnic harmony, unity
Religion
ISLAMIC clerics have appealed to Nigerians to be United and desist from utterances capable of destroying the country.
The clerics in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos noted that peaceful coexistence would promote peace, economic stability and development.
Mr Wasiu Ismail, a member of the Islamiyah foundation, said that unity among the various ethnic groups in the country would promote cultural integration in the country.
“This is the time to be integrated socially, mentally, and morally for national peace and development.
” When we exchange culture and embrace one another, then there will be peace and unity in the country.
“The government should also create a better platform that will harmonize all ethnic groups together in the country, ” he said.
Ismail appealed to those clamoring for division in the country to desist from such pronouncement and embrace oneness.
“We can not withstand the hardship and pains that come with a divided nation.
“It is better we continue to manage ourselves for a better and greater tomorrow.
“Things will get better. It is a matter of time, and also requires our collective efforts and cooperation, ” Ismail said.
He urged religious leaders to continue to preach to their followers on national peace, harmony, and development.
Speaking in the same vein, Mr Teslim Sultan, a member of the United Muslim Council of Nigeria(UMC), urged Nigerians to shun ethnic violence and promote one united country.
“Religious bigotry and ethnic clashes will not take us anywhere. It will rather retard the national growth.
“It will be better for us to work collectively for the development of the nation so that we can all have peace than beating the drums of war.
“I do not pray for war in the country and may God restore peace into the land of the living, ” he said.(NAN).
