THE Civil Liberties Organization Anambra State Branch has called for in depth and discreet investigation into the circumstances surrounding abandoned Umuchu Transmission Substation and Agu Awka-Umuchu Double CCT Lines project awarded in 2021 at the cost of $785m with nothing to show on the ground after alleged payment of huge money to the contractor handling the project, Cartlark International Limited.
In a statement signed by Vincent Ezekwueme and Chidi Mbah Chairman and Secretary respectfully, the CLO extolled the patriotism, diligence and compassion of Dom Okafor for his motion of urgent public importance on the floor of House of Representation by bringing to their notice for prompt attention and action on the abandoned multi-million dollar projects.
The CLO also commended the House of Representatives for their patriotic and nationalistic resolution to investigate the $785 million projects to unravel the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of the projects that would have made life comfortable and secure the lives of the citizens.
The group appealed for quick action in constituting the investigative panel and the contractor to immediately and urgently go back to site and commence work.
“The abandoned projects should not be allowed to be swept under the carpet and the perpetrators should be made to face the full wrath of the law if anyone is found wanting.
“Citizens must take responsibility of all projects in their areas, monitor all projects and report underperforming contractors to appropriate quarters for prompt actions,” the CLO said, adding that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission should also patriotically investigate the matter to unravel how such huge money was released for the life-saving projects without any tangible works on the site or if the money eventually get into private pockets to the detriment of the citizens.
