CLO urges Gov. Soludo to tackle high cost of transportation, insecurity in Anambra state

THE Civil Liberties Organization Anambra State Branch has made a passionate and patriotic appeal to Governor Charles Soludo, to rescue the citizens from excruciating sufferings, agony, pains and predicaments on daily basis as a result of the high cost of transportation, dilapidated roads and insecurity in the state and the exploitative tendencies of commercial drivers and transporters.

In a press statement by Vincent Ezekwueme and Chidi Mbah Chairman and Secretary respectively on the spot assessment of complaints and lamentations of citizens, residents and visitors, it noted the incredible but existential reality that Keke and bus fares have risen to between N1000 and N1500 for short distances in Onitsha from N300 and N400 before the hike in petrol prices.

“We appeal to His Excellency Gov Soludo to direct his Commissioners for Transport and Works to come out of their comfort zones and pay working and on the spot assessment of the state of affairs in order to proffer solutions to the despicable and pathetic situation.

The statement urged the Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Tony Ifeanya to also hold meetings with Petroleum Marketers to device means of reducing cost of petroleum products which has adversely affected cost of transportation, goods and services.

It urged the government to immediacy commence processes towards decongesting Federal Housing Gate,33, Nsugbe, Nkwelle, Otuocha roads by awarding contracts for constructing Obinna Iloh Street that links Nkwelle in Oyi LG to Nkpor in Idemili North LG, which is less than 10-minute drive.

It also called for rehabilitation work on Magazine Junction GRA Onitsha to Y Junction in Nkwelle for easy flow of traffic.

“Most importantly government should float subsidized public transport buses in strategic areas in the state to solve the transportation problems in the state/

“The most essence of government is the protection of lives, properties of the citizens and the greater happiness of greatest number of citizens.

“We commends recent appointment, screening, confirmation and swearing in of Law Mefor as Commissioner for Information. With his wealth of experience and exposures, we expect him to live up to expectations and make himself available and accessible to citizens,” the CLO said.
