Cobbler, 27, docked for allegedly stealing cellphone, earpiece

A 27-year-old cobbler, Babatunde Morakinyo, on Friday appeared before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly stealing an Android Tablet and two pieces of earpiece, valued N271,000.

Morakinyo, who resides in Mushin area of Lagos State, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, to which he plead not guilty.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the defendant committed the offences with some others currently at large on April 22 at 4.40a.m., in Iwaya area of Yaba in Lagos State.

Oriabure said that the defendant broke into one Miss Chinenye Okeke’s apartment and stole her Samsung S4 tablet valued N250,000.

“The defendant also stole two pieces of Samsung wireless earpiece valued N21,000,” he added.

He said that the defendant was caught, but his accomplices escaped with the stolen items.

Oriabure said that the offences contravened Sections 287 (5)(f)of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 (5)(f) stipulates seven years’ jail term for stealing.

The magistrate, Mrs B. Salawu, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

Salawu ordered that the surety must be residing within the court’s jurisdiction, be gainfully employed with evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Salawu adjourned the case until July 19 for mention. (NAN)
