Cocoa farmer, 40, docked over alleged cheating

A 40-year-old Cocoa farmer, Otun Anayor, was on Wednesday, docked before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court over alleged N225,000 cheating.

The Prosecutor, ASP. Emmanuel Abdullahi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Sept. 15, 2022 at Saga Otun Village via Ile-Ife.

Abdullahi said that the defendant cheated one Adebisi Busayo when she gave him her Cocoa farm, promising to give her 200kg of dried cocoa beans.

He said that the defendant only gave 50kg to Busayo and refused to give her the remaining 150kg Cocoa beans valued at N225, 000.

The prosecutor added that the offence contravened Sections 390 and 421 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the two counts charge of cheating and stealing.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Okoh Wonder, applied for bail of the defendant in most liberal term.

Wonder promised that his client would not jump bail, but would provide reliable surety.

Magistrate A.O. Famuyide, however, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N100, 000 with one reliable surety.

Famuyide said that the surety must swear to affidavit of means, resides within the court jurisdiction and be a building owner with N50, 000 recognisances.

She, then adjourned the case until Jan. 6 for hearing.(NAN)
