THE National Boundary Commission says it has commenced the sensitization campaign of its forthcoming boundary demarcation exercise in affected Enugu and Ebonyi communities.

Mr Adamu Adaji, Director General of the commission made the disclosure on Wednesday in Enugu during a joint sensitization campaign for border communities on the demarcation expected to commence from March 22.

Adaji said that the campaign became necessary to acquaint the communities with modalities for the demarcation and to get the needed cooperation from them.

“The commission in collaboration with the boundary committees of both states conducted tracing exercises on interstate boundaries in 2011 and later in 2013.

“We discovered that some sectors were disputed as communities from both sides made varying claims.

“The agency and the states’ boundary committees would commence the boundary demarcations from March 22  and it is expected to last for 90 days,” he said.

He noted that grey areas shall be resolved using ‘instrument lines’ while emplacement of pillars and resolution of the 36km disputed and skipped areas would be peacefully affected.

”Certified court judgments including administrative practices would serve as guides in the demarcation of the boundaries.

”Adequate security has been guaranteed by both states towards the effective participation of the field officers while they shall sponsor their contingents during the pillar emplacement, ” he said.

Mrs Cecilia Ezeilo, Enugu State Deputy Governor applauded the commission and the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation for efforts made to permanently demarcate the interstate boundary.

“It is gratifying that the age-long interstate boundary disputes between both ends would soon be permanently solved as boundary demarcations are not a barrier to friendship,” she said.

Dr Kelechi Igwe, Ebonyi Deputy Governor said that he was delighted that the states were meeting to sensitize the people on ways of permanently demarcating their communities’ boundaries.

“We agreed during several meetings to assiduously sustain the peace pact agreed upon to serve as road maps of achieving better relationships.

“I sincerely thank the governors of both states for their commitment and logistic support towards ensuring the success of the demarcation and achieving lasting peace in the affected areas,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that representatives of the boundary areas of Ivo, Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi  and Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State pledged to ensure a smooth demarcation exercise. (NAN)
