IN commemorating the World Humanitarian Day (WHD), the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) on Wednesday said that improving humanitarian response in Nigeria was its top priority.

Sen. Basheer Mohammed, Federal Commissioner, NCFRMI, made this known as the Commission joined the United Nations to mark the 2020 WHD.

He said that the commission was working tirelessly to improve the humanitarian response in Nigeria, with partners like the UNHCR, IOM, ECOWAS, ILO, and many others.

According to him, with the necessary support, NCFRMI has aligned its political will to improve the lives of our vulnerable citizenry.

He commended the resilience of aid workers, who were faced with the most daunting challenge in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Mohammed lauded the strong commitment of the commission to continue to strive for the return, rehabilitation, and reintegration of persons of concern.

“Today is a memorable day of the year for us all, especially for our persons of concern in various parts of the country, who have shown incredible courage and resilience and have persevered through unbearable conditions.

“NCFRMI is an agency under the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs that is responsible for the protection, care, maintenance, and provision of durable solutions to persons of concern.

“We make a strong statement that we will continue to strive for their return, rehabilitation, and reintegration.

“This year’s commemoration of World Humanitarian Day highlights the role of humanitarian workers, especially frontline health workers, who provide life-saving services to our most vulnerable populations. Often, in difficult and dangerous situations and sometimes paying the ultimate price.”

Mohammed lauded President Muhammadu Buhari’s initiative for establishing the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development.

He said that the ministry had served as the platform to the warehouse and take on the challenge of empowering persons of concern across the country so that they can become more self-reliant.

According to him, the appointment of Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq as the coordinating Minister, along with her commitment and dedication to the humanitarian response, is one that is unmatched.

“It is my pleasure to join the global conversation today and use the hashtag #RealLifeHeroes.

“Because without your dedication, we would not be in a position to make the gains we are celebrating today,” Mohammed said. (NAN)
