Commonwealth society urges Nigerians to embrace ‘Nigerian Project’

ROYAL Commonwealth Society, Nigeria Branch, has called on “all citizens both home and abroad to buy in and accord greater importance to nation-building processes and national development for the collective good of Nigeria and all Nigerians.”
The Country Director of the society, Mr Blackson Bayewumi made the call in a press release on Tuesday.
Bayewumi was responding to Nigeria’s celebration, assessment, and review of the performance of the present government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu in the past one year.
He said that because every citizen is a stakeholder in the “Nigerian Project”, it had become their responsibility of every Nigerian to accord greater importance to the development of the country for the collective good of all compatriots.
“The Nigeria of our dream is not only for politicians and public office holders to build but the responsibility of all Nigerians,” he said.
“National unity, peace building, true federalism, sustainable development, and national prosperity should be the focus of all elected officials at all levels.
“Since the readmission of Nigeria to the Commonwealth in 1999, we have been promoting good governance and supporting the government with the aim of deepening democracy building and strengthening necessary democratic institutions in the country,” he added.
According to him, it is in view of this that the need has arisen to review where the nation is coming from, ascertain where it is it is now, and clearly define where it is after 25 years of stable democratic dispensation.
He, therefore, called for periodic consultation between the government and people of Nigeria to appraise, evaluate, assess the current democratic dispensation in the country in order to make necessary improvement aimed at enhancing citizen’s participation , optimal service delivery by political actors among others.
He insisted that such periodic consultations would promote trust, build concensus, accountabilIty, and transparency, as well as create room for the participation of citizens in governance.
“Poverty, unemployment, insecurity, income inequality, dependency burden, high cost of living, high cost of doing business, and other challenges facing the country should be accorded high priority for the betterment of the citizenry,” he stated. (NAN)
