LAGOS State government has urged the farmers in more than 3,900 community development associations across the state and heads of department for Agriculture and Social Services in the 20 Local Government Councils and 37 Local Council Development Areas to embrace mechanised farming and promote community agriculture in the state.
Speaking at the official launch of Mechanised Community Agriculture and Products Exhibition organised by the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs in collaboration with Dizengoff Nigeria Limited, Akeem Omoyele Sulaimon, the special adviser to the governor on Communities and Communications, noted that mechanised equipment ensure optimum production in farming and improve development in agriculture for better yields.
He reiterated that the present administration remains committed to enlightening stakeholders on the importance of mechanised community agriculture and empowering interested individuals across the local governments and local council development areas to engender food safety and security as well as boost local production in agricultural business at the grassroots.
“This programme is one of the policy thrusts of the State Government to prove that food security is important for the survival of the citizenry. Let us join the league of major players in Agricultural Mechanisation so as to achieve an increase in the scale of production that would match the population growth rate in the State,” he stated.
Earlier in his welcome address, Fola Padonu, the permanent secretary in the ministry said that mechanised farming is one of the innovative solutions in technology towards the realisation of the food security and employment generation in the State.
Delivering a goodwill message at the event, Antti Ritvonen, the chief executive officer and country manager, Dizengoff Nigeria Ltd, appreciated the government for its partnership with the company over the years to enhance mechanised community agriculture in Lagos State.
He expressed the hope that the collaboration will yield the expected outcome for the farmers and stakeholders, noting that contemporary mechanised agriculture methods will improve local production and enhance agricultural development at the grassroots.
The event which held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa was attended by senior staff of the State government, the management staff of Dizengoff Nigeria Limited and stakeholders of the agricultural sector in Lagos.
