A call has been made for governments at all levels to establish the Old peoples’ Home in the country. Vivian Onwuekwe, the president Enyinwanyi Obosi (wives of traditional chiefs) in Obosi community Idemili North Local Government Area, made the call during `Ite Ogbo’ for those that had attained 80 years.
Onwuekwe is a medical director, Ezinne Specialist Hospital and one of those who spoke during mass birthday celebration of the octogenarians.
“Government is supposed to take care of the elderly, build homes for them and even give them stipends.
“They should be given free medical treatment in our government hospitals.
“We give them free medical treatment, sponsored by Obosi Development Association (ODA), U.S.,” Onwuekwe said.
She thanked the traditional ruler and his cabinet for seeing to the successful celebration of the `Ite Ogbo Festival, 2018’, saying that Obosi people were proud to celebrate their elderly.
Deacon Ike Mmadubosa, the president-general, ODA however, announced that Obosi Community was on the verge of opening a major old people’s home.
“We have also initiated a health insurance scheme for the elderly,’’ he said, stressing, “we are seeking partnership from the state government to see to its fruition’’.
Emeka Chude, the chairman Ito Ogbo Organising Committee, lamented that there were no old people’s home or working health insurance scheme for the aged.
“We don’t have old people’s home. At this age of 80, health insurance will be of importance to this group of people and the older ones to take care of their health needs,” Chude added.
