The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Abuja chapter, on Tuesday, called for a new mindset in creating value from available data to stimulate economic growth in the country.
The Chairman of NCS, Abuja chapter, Mr Ayodeji Abitogun, made the call during the society’s 2nd annual workshop with the theme “Data Management for Economic Growth”.
Abitogun stressed the need to move the county from building traditional cities to smart ones using the the right data.
According to him, authorities in the country must change the approach to data management to move from building traditional cities to smart ones.
He said “smart cities are built on big data, which is an enabler of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
“The big question is: are we collecting the right data?, and what are we doing with the data?.
“Creating value from available data for economic growth requires a new mindset. A mindset that is practical, focusing on review and analysis of the whole data value chain from data source of different formats to pattern analysis, using the right available tools, monitoring behaviour, preserving and securing the data.”
The chairman further emphasised that for data to be meaningful, information from different sources must be well analysed and presented in a way that would be acceptable to stakeholders involved in decision making.
The President of Computer Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN) Prof. Charles Uwadia, said there was need to increase advocacy to ensure that Information Communication Technology (ICT) took its rightful place in the country.
According to him, there is much that can be achieved with ICT if properly applied and this can be applied in all sectors of the economy.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop provides platform for policy makers to interface with professionals within the information technology ecosystem to discuss issues that affect the country. (NAN)
