Condom key to disease, birth control – AHF
Health
MR. Taofeek Adeleye, the Prevention Programme Manager, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), says condom is imperative in preventing Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and unplanned pregnancies.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday that when used correctly and consistently, the condom was capable of preventing infections and
be a veritable tool for birth control.
The manager, who dismissed insinuations and ideations that forbid the use of condoms, said that it formed part of the factors that determined condom use.
He said “culture, beliefs, and ideations definitely form part of the factors that determine condom use in Nigeria.
“However, the need for infection prevention and birth control have economic and religious implications as well. If people have infections and become sick,
who will be in Church and Mosque,” he asked.
Adeleye also reiterated the importance of condoms in driving a healthy population capable of reaping demographic dividends through reliable management.
According to him, if the number of children in a country outweighs the productive age group, there will be pressure on basic and social amenities,
hence the overwhelming importance of condom use.
He expressed the commitment of AHF to advocate for condom use in Nigeria with a strong outreach in rural areas.
Adeleye added that “AHF is about the only implementing partner in Nigeria that has more presence in rural areas than urban centers.”
He explained that most of the group’s supported healthcare facilities were in rural areas.
The AHF official asserted that the foundation had captured vulnerable and most marginalized population with the strategic distribution of
condoms, aimed at making the commodity available to people who needed it but could not afford it. (NAN)
