Six countries in Africa, led by Congo were listed as having the top neglected displacement crises in the world, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) said on Thursday.

According to an NRC ranking of the top 10 neglected crises worldwide, Congo was followed by South Sudan, the Central African Republic, Burundi, Ethiopia, Palestine, Myanmar, Yemen, Venezuela and Nigeria.

The aid agency used three criteria in compiling its list: lack of funding, inadequate media attention and political and diplomatic neglect.

“The crises on the African continent seldom make media headlines or reach foreign policy agendas before it is too late,” NRC head, Jan Egeland, said.

At the end of 2017,  some 4.5 million people were internally displaced in Congo and 700,000 had fled the country as ethnic rivalries, resource competition and a lack of government control fuelled conflicts. (dpa/NAN)
