THE people of Yenagoa, Capital City of Bayelsa State, recently received the team from Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC Zonal Office from Port Harcourt who visited to organise another edition of the Consumer Conversation. The programme is a key component of the ongoing 2017 Year of the Nigerian Telecom Consumer campaign, launched by the NCC at its Head Office in Abuja, on March 15, 2017.
Consumer Conversation, driven by NCC Zonal Offices, is a special and enlarged focused group discussion on telecommunications issues, especially the challenges of telecom service provisioning as they affect the telecom consumer. The Yenagoa conversation is second to be organized by the Port Harcourt Zonal Office of the Commission since the launch of the Year of the Nigerian Telecom Consumer campaigns.
Umar Danbatta, executive vice chairman, NCC, who was represented at the event by Chidi Diugwu, zonal controller of Port Harcourt Office of the Commission, highlighted Commission’s efforts in consumer empowerment through enlightenment and education programmes as the major thrust of the Conversation. Danbatta thus used the platform to address consumers and other stakeholders present on issues of concern to both the Commission and its stakeholders.
These issues include:
1. Drop calls and their causative factors which components can either arise from network impairment or the use of sub-standard terminal devices.
2. Promotions, advertisements and other value added services provisioning that must require consumer consent.
3. Billing integrity questions that may arise from (2) above.
4. The safety level of non-ionizing (in contrast to its ionizing counterpart) electromagnetic, EMF, radiation as well as the corresponding regulatory guidelines.
5. The growing need for child on-line protection and dominant user behaviour.
The programme, attended by a broad spectrum of stakeholders including students at different levels of learning, civil servants, youth organisations and personnel of security agencies, was concluded with commendations and solidarity messages from representatives of the NYSC State Coordinator, C.E. Igboka; The Comptroller, Nigeria Immigration Service, Bayelsa State Command, Henry White; The Sector Commander, FRSC, Bayelsa State, I.C. Osakwe; and the representative of the State Commissioner of Police, CSP Cecil Brown.
