Convict bags 1 year imprisonment for stealing

AN Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court on Friday, sentenced a  45-year-old man, Sunkanmi Amosun to a term of one year imprisonment, for stealing items worth N72,000

Amosun, with no fixed address, was convicted on a two-count charge bordering on burglary and stealing.

He pleaded guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.O Odumosu, sentence Amosun following his guilty plea.

Odumosu held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

She, consequently, convicted and sentenced the defendant to one year imprisonment without option of fine.

The court added that the convict is to serve his sentence at the Ibara correctional centre.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Kehinde  Fawunmi, told the court that the convict committed the offence on Dec. 2, at about 11:30 a. m. at the Isale Kuto area of Abeokuta.

He said that the convict entered into the house of one Olusegun Abass, and stole a 3kg Gas Cylinder valued N17,000 and a Samsung Galaxy Phone valued N55,000.

“The defendant gained access to the main building through the entrance and from there climbed the rooftop and gained access into the complainant’s room.

“He was about coming out of the roof of the house with the stolen items when some people in the neighborhood saw him.

“He was accosted and interrogated and later handed over to the police at Ibara police station” he said.

The prosecution said that the offence contravenes the provisions of Section 309(2) and 412 of the Criminal Code Law of Ogun 2006.(NAN)
