A vehicle belonging to Nigerian Correctional Service, on Thursday, hit some people at the popular Oja-Oba market in Ilorin, Kwara capital, while conveying some suspects to the court.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the driver of the bus was said to have lost control while on motion, while the vehicle rammed into the people, leaving some them injured, with others escaping by the whiskers.
NAN also reports that the driver of the Coaster bus, with the colour of the correctional service, was said to have driven in high speed and against traffic.
Some of the eyewitnesses told NAN that the bus was coming from Oke-kura correctional centre, which is close to the market, on high speed, resulting in the driver losing control.
The witnesses said that the bus hit some people, including Okada riders, petty traders and passers-by, on the road.
The accident, they said, left two unidentified persons critically injured, adding that they were immediately taken to a nearby hospital.
Reacting to the incident, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Sector Commander in Kwara, Mr Fredrick Ogidan, said that the accident occurred due to reckless driving by the motorists.
According to Ogidan, whenever suspects are being conveyed from a correction centre to court or other places, there are fears that their gang members outside may want to attack the warders and forcefully allow the prisoners to escape.
“They usually blow siren to ensure easy passage, but some motorists are stubborn; they don’t listen to siren.
“Thankful to God that nobody died from the accident, but some sustained injuries,” he said.
The sector commander advised motorists to always respect siren on the road and allow such vehicles to pass in order to prevent avoidable accidents. (NAN)
