A 46-year-old man, James Chukwu and his wife, Chiwendu were docked in a Kubwa Grade I Area Court, Abuja, for alleged defamation of character.
The police charged the couple, who live in Kubwa, Abuja with defamation of character and inciting disturbance.
The Prosecution Counsel, Mr John Okpa, told the court that the complainant, Ruth Enabosi, filed a criminal complaint against the couple in Kubwa Grade I Area court, on Aug. 29.
Okpa said that the court ordered the case to be transferred to the Kubwa Police Division for investigation, following an oral application made by the complainant’s lawyer, Anenih Enabosi.
He alleged that the couple, whom are the complainant’s neighbours, called her a prostitute in public and accused her of reporting them to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for illegal connection.
The prosecution counsel informed the court that there was tension between the complainant and the defendants adding that they may commit same offence if granted bail.
He however urged the court to order the defendants to write an undertaking to maintain peace pending the determination of the case.
The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 392 and 114 of the Penal Code.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty.
The judge, Malam Muhammad Adamu, admitted the defendants to N200, 000 bail each with one surety each whom must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
Adamu said the sureties must provide means of identification and their addresses must be verified by the prosecution counsel.
He however ordered the defendants to enter an undertaking to maintain peace adding that if they do not comply, their bail would be revoked.
He adjourned the case until Dec. 19 for hearing. (NAN)
