A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday discharged a scavenger, Adamu Umar, charged with theft.

Umar of Jabi Motor Park, Abuja, had pleaded guilty to a count charge of theft and begged for leniency.

“My lord please temper justice with mercy, I will not do it again. I don’t know what happened to me, don’t send me to jail.

“I am so sorry for what I did, I plead with this court to reduce my punishment for I know I am guilty of the allegation,’’ Umar begged.

The judge, Mr Maiwa Inuwa, discharged the defendant and warned Umar never to commit such offence again.

“Desist from such acts in future, become better citizen and human being, consequently the First Information Report is hereby struck out and the defendant discharged,’’ he held.

He said the court struck out the case for lack of complainant’s interest.

The judge said that the complainant had not appeared in court since the defendant was charged to court.

The prosecuting counsel, Mrs Ukagha Ijeoma, said the matter was reported at Utako Police Station, Abuja, on July 19 by Hussaini Jibrin of AMAC task force security attached to Utako Market.

Ijeoma said that while the complainant was on patrol within the market, he saw Umar with two iron component of transformer he stole from a shop in the market.

She said that immediately Umar sighted the complainant he ran away but he was arrested with the exhibit.

She said that during police investigation, Umar confessed that he stole the two iron component of the transformer from a shop in the market.

The prosecutor said the exhibit was recovered from Umar and the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
