A Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Thursday sentenced a 30-year-old unemployed man, Ifeanyi Joel, to one month imprisonment for stealing N22,500 from his friend.

The judge, Muhammed Wakili, sentenced Joel after he pleaded guilty to a count charge of theft and prayed for leniency.

The judge, however, gave the convict an option of N5,000.

Wakili  ordered Joel to pay  N20,000 as compensation to the complainant.

He warned the convict to stay away from crime, saying that the court would not be lenient on him if caught in crime again.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Ferdinand Orji, told the court that the complainant, Mr Eze Gideon of Plot 2, Ekukinam Street, Utako, Abuja, reported the case at the Utako Police Station on Aug. 20.

Orji told the court that, on Aug.18 while the complainant was sleeping, the convict stole his N22,500 from his trousers.

The prosecutor said that, during police investigation, the convict confessed to  committing the crime.

He said that the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
