Court remands 2 farmers over alleged house breaking, N12m theft

A Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered that two farmers, Alexander Unongo and Terkuma  Anule be remanded at the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Makurdi for allegedly stealing  N12 million belonging to Fidelis Unongo.

The defendants who live at No 3, School Lane, Makurdi were charged with criminal conspiracy, house breaking and theft.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Kelvin Mbanongun, however, ordered that the  defendants should be remanded based on the discretion of the court.

Mbanongun then adjourned the matter until June 6, for further mention.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Jonah Uletu told the court that the case was reported at DZ Section, State CID Makurdi by the victim, Fidelis on April 2.

Uletu said that on April 2, the defendants and others now at large, conspired and broke into the room of the complainant and stole his cash sum of N12 million.

Uletu said that the defendants were arrested during police investigation and they had confessed to committing the crime while a cash sum of N919,000 being part of the stolen money was recovered from them.

He said the offences contravened Sections 97, 353 and 288 of the penal code laws of Benue, 2004.(NAN)
