A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Makurdi on Wednesday ordered the remand of one Moses Tamen and Luper Sende in a correctional centre for allegedly belonging to “Black Skull Confraternity” a cult group.

The duo, who live at different addresses in Makurdi, were charged with criminal conspiracy, illegal possession of firearm and membership of unlawful society.

Chief Magistrate Vincent Kor, did not take the plea of the defendants for want of jurisdiction.

Kor adjourned the matter until July 27 for further mention.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Jonah Uletu, told the court that the duo committed the crime on May 31.

He said that the police received a distress call from the Vigilante Group at Nyima Layout, International Market, Makurdi, that a gang of notorious armed cultists were sighted on motorcycles in the area.

Uletu said while acting on the tip off, the team arrested the defendants and recovered  a locally-made pistol containing four rounds of live ammunition from them while others escaped.

He  said during police investigation, they voluntarily confessed being members of Black Skull Confraternity that had been terrorizing residents.

He  said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 97 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue, 2004, 11(2) and 4(2) of the Abduction, Hostage-Taking, Kidnapping, Secret Cult and Similar Activities Prohibition Laws of Benue, 2017.

He said the offence also contravened the provisions of Section 3(1) of the Robbery and Firearm Act, 2004.(NAN)
