A 65-year-old Sule Amodu of Hausa Quarters, Igumale, Ado Local Government Area of Benue, was on Tuesday remanded at the Makurdi Correctional Centre, for allegedly beating a woman to death.

Amodu was charged before a Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court with Criminal Conspiracy and Culpable Homicide, punishable under Sections 97 and 222 of the Penal Code of Benue, 2004.

The Prosecutor, ASP Hyacinth Gbakor, told the court that the case was transferred from the Area Command Police Headquarters, Otukpo, to the state CIID, Makurdi, on Oct. 5, 2020, via a letter dated same day for investigation.

The letter stated that on Sept. 1, 2020, one Gambo Shaibu also of Hausa Quarters reported the matter at the Area Command Headquarters, Otukpo, via a written petition.

In the petition, Shaibu said that the defendant had conspired with three others – one Taminu Ibrahim, Baba Inuwa and Awa Ibrahim – and attacked him and his mother, Amina Shaibu.

Gbakor noted that the defendant and his accomplices assaulted him and his mother with sticks and stabbed his mother on the leg with a broken bottle.

The prosecutor said the complainant’s mother died while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Otukpo.

He said that the defendant was arrested during police investigation for committing the crime, while the three others were still at large. When the case came up for mention, no plea was taken for want of jurisdiction.

The prosecutor told the court that investigation into the matter was ongoing, and asked for another date. The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Vincent Kor, adjourned the matter to Nov. 30, 2020, for further mention. (NAN)
