A Kubwa Magistrates’ Court in Abuja, on Monday, remanded  in custody a fugitive, Abubakar Idris, who allegedly escaped from the Kuje Correctional centre in 2022.

The Magistrate, Nneaka Lesley however adjourned the matter until Feb.4 for hearing.

Earlier, the prosecuting counsel, MrJohn Okpa told the court that Idris was in 2022 arraigned for receiving stolen item and remanded in Kuje prison.

Okpa said that the defendant escaped during the Boko haram attack on the correctional centre in 2022.

He said that based on a tip-off, a team of police detectives attached to ‘B’ Division Dei-dei arrested the defendant on Dec.10, 2024 while allegedly selling psychotropic substances at Tunga Wakili area in Abuja

The prosecutor further alleged that some wraps of the intoxicants, Iron Jack, marijuana and a scissors were found in the defendant’s possession.

The offences, Okpa said, contravened the provisions of sections 128 and 199 of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the two counts of escaping from lawful custody and constituting a public nuisance.(NAN)
