An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Wednesday, ordered the remand of a 30-year-old man, Iwaetan Segun, in the correctional centre in Ado-Ekiti over alleged rape, cultism and illegal possession of firearms.

The defendant, whose address was not provided, is being tried on a three-count charge of alleged rape, cultism and possession of firearms.

The Prosecutor, Insp Bamikole Olasukanmi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Feb. 5 in Ado-Ekiti.

He said that the defendant, who was found to be a member of Aye Confraternity, raped a 20-year-old girl, while he had in his possession unlawful firearms.

According to him, the offences contravene Section 31 of the Child Right Law of Ekiti State, 2012, Section 2 of Secret Cult Abolition Law, 2017 and section 3 of Robbery and Firearms Special Provision Act, 2004.

The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant in a correctional centre, pending legal advice from the office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
The plea of the defendant was, however, not taken.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abdulhamid Lawal, ordered the remand of the defendant in the correctional centre, pending issuance of legal advice.

He, thereafter, adjourned the case till March 31, for mention. (NAN)
