AN Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Wednesday sentenced a 28-year-old vagrant, Tunde Oluwajenyo, to seven months in prison for stealing a woman’s bag containing an Itel cellphone worth N57, 500 from the premises of Kings College Secondary School, Lagos.
Oluwajenyo, whose address was not given, had on May 4, during arraignment pleaded not guilty to two counts of unlawful entry and stealing.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the case went on trial and several witnesses were called.
However, on Dec. 3, in the middle of the trial the accused, changed his plea to guilty and the case was adjourned until Dec. 12 for review of facts and sentence.
Delivering judgment, Magistrate A. A. Famobiwo, held that the accused was guilty as charged and sentenced him to seven months in prison without an option to pay a fine.
Famobiwo sentenced him to four months on the first count of unlawful entry and three months on the count of stealing.
She ordered that the sentence would take effect from the date the convict changed his plea.
The prosecutor, Insp Solomon Mawari, told the court that accused committed the offences on May 3, at 2.00am, at King College Secondary School Adeyemo Alakija, Victoria Island, Lagos.
He said that the convict unlawfully entered the premises of the school and stole a handbag containing an Itel cellphone valued at N57, 500, belonging to a staff of the school, Roseline Fowoshade.
The offence, he said contravened the provisions of sections 287 and 308 (2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
