COVID-19: Communication expert tasks Nigerians on digital skills acquisition

Christie Adejoh, Lead Consultant, Marcee Mega Communications, on Saturday urged government and individual Nigerians to focus more on digital skills acquisition to remain compliant as COVID-19 ravaged the world.

Adejoh made the call during an online meeting organised by the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), to address emerging trends in Nigerian cultural industry.

The theme of the programme was: “New Frontiers in Skills Acquisition during COVID-19″.

Adejoh said that acquiring digital skills currently was quite paramount to aid learning across all aspect of human endeavour.

She said government should create platforms where Nigerians could be familiarised with digital technology while individual Nigerians also take conscious efforts in improving on themselves.

”We have attained an unprecedented season in our lives, we are now in what we call the new normal, new reality which will not go in a hurry.

”This behoves on us to reset our developmental stride, COVID-19 has put Nigeria on the better pedestrian, so skills acquisition in digital technology should be underscored.

”It is imperative to acquire skills in this area to get us all connected to digital learning and to enhance remote learning,” she said.

Adejoh noted that as a communication expert, presentations online ought to be done in  different ways compared to the physical presentations done pre-COVID-19.

She said digital skills were presently needed in every facet of the economy ranging from health, finance, education and all.

Adejoh, however, urged every Nigerian to be deliberate in learning new skills in the digital world for personal growth.

”There is need for huge investment in human capital development, the best way to develop oneself is to read and maintain good associations,” she said.

The communication expert urged Nigerians to embrace nation’s culture which she said was the basis for growth.

Adejoh advised parents to familiarise their wards with their mother tongue, African cuisines and everything indigenous to the nation as that would help at the critical period.

She also urged the federal government to consider all other aspects of the economy as money spinners if properly developed, citing examples like the culture and agriculture industries.

”As a nation, we should focus on our culture and agric-export as other means through which revenue can be generated, it is time to pay minimal attention to oil.

”The nation needs serious help in terms of e-commerce and marketing,” the consultant said.

Adejoh called on all telecommunication companies in Nigeria to render some level of assistance without mitigating their profit in ensuring that Nigerians got access to data.

She said access to data and electricity were major setbacks for the digital world to thrive better in Nigeria.

Earlier, the convener, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, Director-General, NCAC, said that huge opportunities abound even as COVID-19 ravaged the world.

He said every Nigerian must look inwards and acquire digital skills to remain relevant as personal development was key at this critical period. (NAN)
