Coronavirus Pandemic

THE Defence and Police Officer’s Wives Association (DEPOWA), on Wednesday distributed food items to 300 military families in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the Wednesday gesture is DEPOWA’s second COVID-19 palliatives distribution to widows and orphans of fallen heroes in Abuja.

The humanitarian gesture is aimed at giving more succour to the less privileged persons affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking while distributing the palliatives to the beneficiaries, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen.Gabriel Olonisakin, said the gesture was to cushion the economic effect occasioned by the pandemic.

“This is to improve beneficiaries’ lives in this COVID-19 pandemic. We thank God that you are among the living today,” he told them.

Olonisakin urged the beneficiaries to continue to obey precautionary guidelines aimed at checking COVID-19 such as social distancing, maintaining personal and environmental hygiene, avoiding crowded places, among others.

The CDS, who was represented by Rear Adm. Obed Ngalabak, the Chief of Defence, Civil-Military Cooperation, said he was fully in support of what DEPOWA was doing.

Also speaking, DEPOWA President, Omobolanle Olonisakin, who was represented by
DEPOWA Vice President, Abies Oghomwen, said the motive behind the gesture was to show love to the military families.

“These palliatives are to show how much we love and care for them; because of the COVID-19, we decided to put a smile on their faces to alleviate their suffering,” he said.

The beneficiaries, while speaking to NAN, showered encomium on  DEPOWA for the kindness.

One of them, Mrs Rifkatu Danlami, a widow, expressed gratitude to DEPOWA for the package.

“May God bless our mummy, the DEPOWA president, and her family,” the excited widow told NAN.

Another beneficiary, Mrs Janet Ishaku, also a widow, said she was happy when she got the call from DEPOWA because she knew something good was coming her way. “Thank you DEPOWA, I appreciate you,” Ishaku said.

Similarly, Miss Esther Musa, a student, expressed gratitude to DEPOWA and all its executives and prayed God’s guidance and protection over them. (NAN)
