THE Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has expressed concern over the perception of the public on the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), warning that the virus is real and deadly.

Dr Mohammed Kawu, the acting Secretary, FCTA Health and Human Services Secretariat (HHSS), expressed the authority’s concern when he led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the management of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

Kawu said that many people had yet to believe that COVID-19 was real in spite of deaths recorded all over the world.

He added that “one thing about the virus is that if you don’t go for test, you will not know that you have it because it is like the normal flu but more severe.

“It kills and spreads fast; that is why it is dangerous.

“It also presents malaria-like symptoms, pneumonia or upper respiratory infection; in fact, it mimicks a lot of ailments.

“It is a very dangerous disease. So, the best way is to go for test. If you feel unwell or
have any suspicious contact with anybody that has the disease, it is best to self isolate.

“All over the world, the key thing is to increase test, so as to reduce the risk of infecting other people.

“So, it is very important that we partner with NAN to inform the society about the risk factors associated with COVID-19.’’

He expressed the desire of the secretariat to pay such courtesy visit earlier than now to
establish strong relationship with NAN, “considering the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic which is ravaging the world.’’

Earlier, the Managing Director of NAN, Mr Buki Ponle, expressed the readiness of the agency to partner with the secretariat.

Represented by Mr Dele Ojo, the agency’s Director of Finance and Account, Ponle said that with more than 1000 clients and offices in the 36 states of the federation and 24 district offices, NAN was ever ready to send out messages deemed necessary to help curtail the spread of COVID-19.

He said “if you talk to us here in Abuja, your messages will reach the 36 states of the federation. We are ready to partner with you.’’

The Editor-in-Chief of NAN, Mr Silas Nwoha, said that the agency was the most formidable media organisation in the country.

Nwoha assured the secretariat and the team that NAN was ever ready to partner with  any government agencies needing its services.

Members of the delegation from the secretariat were: Dr Abubakar Ahmadu, the Director, Medical and Diagnostic Department, Mr Noel Malam, the Director, Administration and Finance, Dr Danfulani Mohammed, the Director, FCT Health Insurance Scheme, among others.
