COVID-19 has not driven Norwegian couples to separate – Agency

Norway has not seen a rise in separations during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic despite some initial fears, the national statistics agency said on Wednesday.
However, the number of weddings dropped by one fifth in the March-October period, compared with the same period in 2019.
Statistics Norway said the decline in weddings to roughly 12,000 was likely due to many weddings being postponed amid restrictions on public gatherings.
Preliminary statistics for separations and divorces suggest that the number of separations between March and October fell by 253 to 5,715, the lowest tally in 10 years.
“So far, we can’t see any specific Coronavirus effect on the separation tallies,’’ said Ane Margrete Tommeras with the agency.
She noted that fewer people are getting married than before, which also affects the overall separation tallies.
More detailed numbers regarding divorces would show next year since a divorce in Norway does not take effect until a year after separation at the earliest.
Statistics Norway said it has not reviewed numbers related to cohabitating couples in the country of 5.3 million. (dpa/NAN)
