A Bauchi-based NGO otherwise known as Fahimta Women and Youth Development Initiative (FAWOYDI) has distributed food items to vulnerable and less privileged people in three local government areas of the state.

Speaking during the distribution of the items in Bauchi on Thursday, the Executive Director FAWOYDI Hajiya Maryam Garba, said the gesture was to cushion the effect of the COVID-19 lockdown on the vulnerable.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the items distributed included rice, maize spaghetti, cooking oil and soaps among others.

She said the funds were provided for women leadership training in the communities by Action Aid and Global Affairs Canada.

“But with the ravaging pandemic that led to lockdown, a gesture like this at this critical time, is necessary to be there for the poor and the needy,” Garba said.

According to her, there is a need to cushion the effect of the coronavirus pandemic on the real people who cannot afford to feed because of the lockdown order.

She said the palliatives would get to pregnant women, lactating mothers; elderly women and disabled women in the communities of Alkaleri, Bauchi and Giade Local Government Areas.

She added that most of the people lacked the funds to cater for their basic needs.

“So realising all this, we are touched and moved to even do more in order to be able to see that they are taken care of,” she added.

She urged the women to respect the protocol of the coronavirus such as social distance, regular hand washing, use of face masks and staying at home order.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs Ladi Zumunta expressed their appreciation to the NGO for the gesture.

“We are very happy with what they have done for us and our community today. God will bless them for their assistance and give them more,” she said.
