RIVERS State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) has called for the proper disposal of used face masks in order to safeguard the safety of waste collectors and the public.

Mr Felix Obuah, Sole Administrator of the Agency, said that the used and condemned face masks also constitute a health hazard like any other waste.

Obuah made the remark in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Jerry Needam on Thursday in Port Harcourt.

Describing the trend as ugly and unhealthy, Obuah urged residents to ensure better ways of bagging and properly disposing of such sensitive waste.

He also urged residents to dispose of all waste materials only at government approved locations.

“Used face masks littering the roads, streets and gutters in some parts of Port Harcourt could be hazardous to our health.

“It’s indeed irritating and our refuse collectors may be exposed to possible COVID-19 infections if this is not checked,” he said.

The RIWAMA boss also cautioned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, urging residents to act safe as the state strives towards containing COVID 19 pandemic.

“I believe that through public enlightenment programmes by the state government on the dangers of the global scourge, we have been sensitized enough to conduct ourselves properly both in private and public places,” he said.

Obuah added that the state government has put all necessary measures in place to ensure adequate compliance with the COVID-19 restriction orders.

He said that any flagrant disobedience to the orders would not be tolerated. (NAN)
