Coronavirus Pandemic

EDO Waste Management Board has appealed to the state residents to pay their waste bills to allow for proper waste disposal even with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The General Manager of the Board Mr Charles Imariagbe, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Benin.

Imariagbe said that waste managers would not continue to evacuate waste from households who failed to pay their waste bills.

“The waste managers are private operators that are licenced by the Waste Management  Board to carry waste from people’s houses in the state.

“The challenge they are facing now is that many people are not paying. It is not the board that pays the managers but the households.

“Many people are not paying during this COVID-19 pandemic. They have a misconception that they ought not to pay during this period and this is not true,” he said.

He said that the board had been sensitising the people on the need to pay for waste management to allow for proper waste disposal.

“Waste management is a private business where the operators spend their own money to render services which have to be paid for.

“The challenge they are facing is that they do not have sufficient funds to carry out their operations for many people who are not paying their waste bills,” he said.

Imariagbe said the board was being forced to evacuate waste from households who were not paying at the moment noting that enforcement would be carried out on the defaulters as soon as the lockdown was over. (NAN)
