A 21-year-old artisan, Olufemi Bankole, on Tuesday, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing phones from three apartments.

Bankole, who lives at Ayobo, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy, breaking in and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp Emmanuel Ajayi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Aug. 2, at 11p.m. at Ayobo, Lagos.

He said that the defendant and others still at large, broke into the residences of Messrs Olalekan Olalekan, Yusuf Salami and Olatunji Ige, and stole their phones valued N71,000.

“While the defendant was busy jumping from one apartment to another, dispossessing the occupants of their phones, one of the complainants quickly alerted the police, who stormed the scene.

“The defendant was arrested while his accomplices escaped.

“The stolen phones were recovered from him, and he was taken to the police station,” the prosecutor said.

Ajayi alleged that the offences contravened Sections 287, 312(1) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that section 287 prescribes three years jail term for stealing while section 312 attracts three years imprisonment for burglary.

Bankole, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The magistrate, Mrs O.O. Fagbohun, released him on bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Fagbohun said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and must show evidences of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case until Sept. 18 for further hearing.
