AN Oredo Magistrates’ Court sitting in Benin on Wednesday remanded a 22-years-old commercial bus driver, Omobude Osazee, in prison custody after he pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that when the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), Insp. Sylvanus Osado, read the charge to Osazee, he pleaded guilty and added: “I stole the phone out of greed’’.

The accused explained that he saw the phone in his bus after his passengers disembarked, but instead of finding out its owner or handing it over to officials at the park, he switched off the phone.

Consequently, the Magistrate, Mr Paul Saiki, ordered the remand of the driver after he pleaded guilty to the charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The Magistrate subsequently adjourned the case to April 1, for review of the facts of the case and sentencing of the accused.

Earlier, the prosecutor had told the court that the accused allegedly stole an Infinix mobile phone valued at N66, 000 at Oredo area of Benin, on Feb. 18.

Osado said that the when the owner of the phone reported the theft to the police, an investigation commenced and the stolen item was tracked to the buyer, who disclosed that Osazee sold it to him.

The Prosecutor said that the offence committed contravened Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 48, Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, now applicable in Edo State
