The Police Command  in Ogun said it had arrested a 27-year-old man,Godday Robinson, over allegations of rape, stealing and an attempted murder of a 17-year-old girl.

The spokesperson of the command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said in a statement on Thursday in Abeokuta that  Robinson allegedly  committed the offences on April 22, in Agbara, Ado-Odo/Ota Local  council area.

Oyeyemi in the  statement added that the suspect was arrested on April 24.

He said that the arrest followed a report received by the police operatives attached to the Agbara Area Command that a young lady was lying unconscious in a 10-foot-deep pit in a bush.

“Upon receiving  the report from the good samaritan, the area Commander of Agbara Division, ACP Bolanle Muritala, detailed his men to the scene where the young lady was rescued and taken to a hospital with the help of the public.

”When she regained consciousness, the lady explained to the police that the incident happened very early on April 22 while she was returning from work having  being on  night shift  the previous night.

“The  lady added that the suspect who capitalised on the isolated nature of the area, dragged her into the bush where he forcefully raped her, dispossessed her of her Galaxy Samsung phone valued at Nl85,000 and strangled her until she passed out momentarily.

”The suspect who believed that his victim was  dead, dragged her further into the bush and dumped her into a pit .

“After sometime, she came back to life and started shouting for help,” he quoted her .

Oyeyemi said that based on her explanation, Muritala gave  order to his detectives that the suspect must be traced and apprehended.

”Police detectives immediately swung into action, traced the suspect and got him arrested in Agbara area.

“On interrogation, the suspect made a confessional statement and owned up to committing the crime but blamed it on the devil,” the DSP said.

Oyeyemi said that  the state Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson, had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.(NAN)
