THE Cross River Government says the two state-owned football clubs, Calabar Rovers and Pelican Stars will be repositioned to become the best club sides in the country.

The Commissioner for Sports in the state, Agnes Atsu, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar on Wednesday.

Atsu who decried the dwindling fortune of the clubs in the past 16 years, said a committee had being put in place to rebrand and restructure the two club sides.

She said that sports have become big business and Calabar Rovers and Pelican Stars cannot be an exception.

The commissioner said that a short-term measure aimed at ensuring the success of the two club sides in their respective leagues has been put in place.

“We have looked into the players’ welfare with a view to improving their performance in the Nigeria National League (NNL) and the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL)

“We are also in the process of recruiting quality players for the two clubs while also creating a feeder team for them.

“The governor and the entire state executive council and the speaker of the House of Assembly are all on the same page to see new Calabar Rovers and Pelican Stars.

“We are passionate to rebrand and restructure the clubs, especially Rovers, to regain their lost glory in the annals of football in the country,“he said.(NAN)
