THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is prepared to conduct the bye elections scheduled for Saturday in Cross River.

The Commission’s spokesperson in Cross River, Mrs Tonia Nwobi stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar on Tuesday.

Nwobi said the bye elections which would be conducted for two state constituencies and one federal constituency, would take place in 34 polling units in four Local Government Areas of the state.

She explained that the elections would take place in eight polling units in Akamkpa council area, 11 polling units in Biase, two units in Obanliku and 13 in Yala local government.

She added that logistics and security had been put in place to ensure free, fair and credible exercise.

According to her, no fewer than 100,000 voters will participate in the exercise and we are using INEC staff and not adhoc staff for the bye elections.

“Logistics have been fully mobilised for the exercise. Non sensitive materials have been distributed while we await the sensitive ones to be brought to the CBN for onward distribution to the various polling units.

“For security, the Inter-Agency Security Committee on Election Security have already met twice and strategised on how to ensure there is no security lapse on the Election Day.”

NAN reports that the bye elections were scheduled following the judgment of the Court of Appeal. (NAN)
