THE Coalition of Delta State Civil Society Organization (CODELSCO) in collaboration with the State Ministry of Environment has called on relevant stakeholders  to promote clean environment.

They made the call on Tuesday at a sensitization workshop for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and Civil Societies Organizations (CSOs) on waste recycling held at Asaba, to commemorate the 2023 World Environment Day.

According to the  Permanent Secretary of the Delta State Ministry of Environment, Mrs Minnie Oseji,  sensitisation remains key to the  eradication of plastic pollution.

She commended the level of cleanliness in the state saying that Delta had been working with private sector  recycling companies to ensure that plastic waste were converted to  usable products without posing dangers to the people.

“Recycling activities in the state  will soon extend to all Local Governments.

”Government has done a lot of advocacy  in churches, motor parks, schools and other public places  to inform the people of the significance of cleanliness to the environment,” she said.

She, however, observed  that there was need to scale up  actions  against environmental pollution, maintaining that  innovation and monitoring were needed to achieve the desired goal of a clean environment.

Mrs Carolina Usikpedo-Oliseowe, Executive Director, Noble Delta Women for Peace and Development International,  said the day was about how to plan and strategise on saving the planet.

“It is celebrated to mark the importance of nature and should not be undervalued and should not be taken for granted,” she added.

She urged governments and other stakeholders to join hands in tackling the menace of plastic pollution in Nigeria, adding that the 2023 theme was a reminder that people’s actions on plastic pollution matter.

Comrade Sheriff Mulade,  National Coordinator of Center for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ), said that the goal of environmental cleanliness could not  be left for government alone but a collective effort of all citizens to adopted.

“Government should be proactive and not reactive to the recurrent issue of flooding in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the theme of the 2023 world environment day was “ Beat plastic Pollution”. (NAN)
