Cultural festivals will promote peace, unity – Rep Umaru

REP. Jeremiah Umaru, (APC Nasarawa) has called on Nigerians to use cultural festivals as platforms to promote peace and unity in the nation.
Umaru, representing Akwanga/Nassarawa-Eggon/Wamba Federal Constituency, made the call on Wednesday at the 2023 North-Central Cultural carnival of Peace held in Sisinbaki, Wamba Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State.
Umaru, who is the brain behind carnival, said that the cultural activity aimed at bringing together people of diverse cultures within the North-Central and beyond toward promoting peace, unity and progress in the region.
He added it would provide a platform for the sons and daughters of the region to meet and discuss its progress and development.
He explained that cultural troops from Plateau, Benue, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa as well as Taraba and Kaduna states would perform at ghe carnival.
“Carnival such as this is indeed a strong instrument of unity at this time that there is suspicious among different groups in the country.
“In a country with such a rich diversity like ours, when you understand each other’s culture, you respect and reduce areas of friction,” the lawmaker added.
He called on parents to teach their children how to speak thier dialects to prevent those languages from going into extinction.
Umaru promised to promote the cultural activities, adding that it would be part of his contribution toward the preservation of the rich cultural heritage of the region.
In his goodwill message, Mr Lawrence Ayi, the Abaga Toni and Chairman Kokona Traditional Council of Chiefs, lauded the lawmaker for organising the carnival.
The traditional ruler said different cultural troops that performed at the carnival kept aside their differences and the challenges confronting them to fraternise.
He called on notable sons and daughters of the region to support such initiative, adding that it would give the people a sense of belonging.
Mrs Thearesa Tenza, National President of Rindre Women Development Association, commended the lawmaker for the initiative and prayed God to give him the ability to sustain it.
Cultural troops that performed at the carnival includes, Eggon, Rindre, Mada, and Gwandara from Nasarawa state.
other include, Tiv and Idoma from Benue State, Angas, Kantana, Jarawa from Plateau, Jukun from Taraba, Igala from Kogi state, Gbagi and Nupe from Niger, among others. (NAN).
