THE Delta Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr Sonny Ekedayen, has emphasised the need to create jobs for the teeming populace in the state to check restiveness.
The commissioner said this while declaring open a two-day training workshop on the conduct of the state’s 2024 Labour Force Survey on Friday in Asaba.
Ekedayen, represented by the Director of Budget in the ministry, Mr Thomson Olije, said there was the need to create a lot of jobs to engage our population and reduce negative vices to the barest minimum.
He noted that the survey was very important to the state, saying that it was on record that the population had so many young people.
According to him, the completion of this task will be of great benefits to the state and Nigeria at large in addressing the challenges in the labour force.
The commissioner recalled that the survey was being conducted for the third time and commended the participants for their involvement in the exercise.
”I understand that this is the third time the state is embarking on this exercise and that there is a new concept about the labour force relating to participation and willingness to work.
”I,therefore, urge you to seize this opportunity to provide reliable data that will be useful for planning in the state, ” he said.
Ekedayen also commended the National Bureau of Statistics for always supporting the state in area of training of personnel.
The State Director of Statistics, Ms Nkechi Maduemezia, said Delta was the first state in the country to adopt the latest concept in the conduct of the labour force survey.
Maduemezia explained that the survey had been taken beyond civil servants/public sector workers or those in paid employment.
According to her, the entire working population is now being involved as well as gathering data of those who are willing to work and unemployed persons.
Maduemezia commended the Commissioner for the support towards achieving the feat, as well as for the training of statisticians.
Maduemezia also said that the training was being conducted to prepare field officers recruited for the exercise of gathering reliable data.
She disclosed that the trainees, who were outstanding during the training for the Poverty Mapping Survey two weeks ago, were selected for the exercise.

The training workshop is a collaboration between the state ministry and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).(NAN)
