THE Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari’s scorecards in his 2021 Democracy Day broadcast, urging for increased commitment to fighting insecurity in the country.
Reacting to the broadcast, IPAC Chairman in Lagos State, Mr James Adeshina, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the president sounded like “a caring father,” but called for an end to unnecessary killings by bandits.
Adeshina, who urged the president to act faster in stemming the rising cases of insecurity, however, advised Nigerians to support the government by being security conscious as government could not do it alone.
He said: “This is what the president signed for. His core responsibility is to safeguard lives and property of Nigerians and welfare of the people. He is working but we demand more.
“The president should put more efforts in ending banditry, kidnapping and all unrests the country is currently facing. Nigerians believe that he is capable and has the power to give security and ensure property and lives are safe.
“The president has really tried when it comes to the issue of resolving insecurity in Nigeria but I believe the president needs to do more. Nigerians demand more from him .”
The IPAC chairman urged security chiefs to step up their game and perform better than their predecessors in returning Nigeria to its former peaceful state when people slept with their two eyes closed.
He said Nigerians would not score the president high except efforts were made to stem the tides of insecurity and address poverty in the land.
On the president’s resolve to reform electoral process, Adeshina said the only way to deepen Nigeria’s democracy was to ensure that the will of the people always prevail during elections.
He said electoral manipulations and riggings that usually threw up bad leaders would be stopped if the nation embraced technologies in accreditation, voting, and counting of votes during elections.
The IPAC chairman said the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution should be an opportunity to bequeath a free, fair, transparent and credible election to Nigeria and to mature the nation’s democracy.
“We need a state of emergency in the reform of our electoral system in Nigeria for us to get our democracy better and enjoy the dividends of democracy.
“We are a leading country in Africa, we are supposed to be at the forefront in elections and democracy. Electronic voting is what IPAC has been seriously advocating,” he said.
On poverty and unemployment, Adeshina said the oresident should do more as many Nigerians were wallowing in poverty and unemployment.
He said that more should be done in the area of economy to create jobs and reduce inflation rate.
Adeshina urged the president to employ good hands and brains to work on the nation’s economy to reduce poverty and unemployment, which he said were the root cause of insecurity.
President Buhari had, in the nationwide broadcast, presented the scorecard of his administration and assured Nigerians of his commitment to improved security and poverty reduction.
