THE National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), has urged Nigerians to participate in building a society that upholds the principles of transparency, accountability and the rule of law.
The Director-General of the institute, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, made the call in a statement issued to mark the 2023 Democracy Day.
“On this Democracy Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to the democratic ideals that bind us as a nation. Let us embrace diversity, tolerance and respect for one another’s rights and opinions.
“As we celebrate, let us renew our pledge to be active participants in shaping our nation’s destiny.
“Together, we can build a society that upholds the principles of transparency, accountability and the rule of law.
“Together, we can build a Nigeria where every citizen’s voice is heard, where justice prevails and where opportunities abound for all,” he said.
Sulaiman said that on the momentous occasion of Democracy Day, Nigerians celebrate the strength and resilience of its democracy.
According to him, democracy has been the bedrock of our nation’s progress and development.
He said that the June 12 celebration symbolises Nigerians’ desire for democracy, justice and respect for the will of the people.
The DG said Democracy Day represents the struggle against military dictatorship and the fight for the recognition of the people’s choice in governance.
Sulaiman said Nigeria’s democracy had come a long way since its restoration in 1999 as it witnessed the peaceful transition of power from one administration to another.
According to him, this is a testament to the maturity and wisdom of our citizens and the tireless efforts of those who had championed democratic principles.
“However, we must not be complacent. Democracy is not a destination but a continuous journey. It requires our collective participation, vigilance, and dedication.
“As we celebrate the progress we have made, we must also recognise the challenges that lie ahead.
“We are confronted with issues that demand our attention such as insecurity, economic disparities, corruption and social unrest.
“But let us remember that democracy empowers us to address these challenges through dialogue, cooperation and inclusive governance.
“It is through the strength of our institutions and the engagement of our citizens that we can build a stronger and more prosperous nation,” he said.
The director-general said that NILDS is fully committed to promoting the values of democracy, fostering legislative excellence and strengthening democratic governance in Nigeria.
He said that the institute was striving to provide knowledge, research and capacity building to lawmakers, policy analysts, civil society organisations and the public at large. (NAN)
