Depression: Expert stresses importance of counselling

DR Abdulkadir Ahmed, the Kwara Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), on Wednesday in Ilorin, advised people to seek counselling on problems capable of causing stress and depression.
Ahmed, who gave the advise during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), explained that stress is a feeling of emotional or physical tension.
He said it could come from any event or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or nervous, adding that “stress is body’s reaction to a challenge or demand.”
The expert observed that stress management is a huge topic, noting that whenever people are confronted with problems, they should avoid being quiet.
“It is recommended that you talk about problems with trusted colleagues or neighbours. You may find out that you are not alone and may find that many other people share your feelings.
“Talking about your problems can release pent-up feelings. if you talk to someone outside of the situation, it may help you to find a solution to the problem,” he said.
Ahmed, however, pointed out that people are moving away from the traditional community set-up that brings people together and ensure caring and sharing of problems together.
He said that the impact of community involvement is important, as it fosters togetherness and brotherhood.
The NMA chairman observed that settings, such as religious places of worship and assembly can serve as an avenue for people to share their problems.
He reiterated that “talking about the problem can help release built-up tension which may give new insight into the situation that is causing the problem.”(NAN)
