Nkem Okeke, the Anambra State deputy governor, on Tuesday, September 25, visited some Holding Centres for displaced flood victims in Ogbaru Local Government Area. He described the level of destruction by the flood as `painful’.
The deputy governor had assured the people that state government was committed to assisting them with basic requirements to mitigate the effects of their displacement.
Okeke appealed to the committee in charge of the flood victims to take proper care of them, particularly in areas of feeding, medication and portable water.
He cautioned that government would not take it lightly with anyone who would go contrary with government’s directive in dehumanising the victims.
Okeke re-assured that more relief materials would be sent to Ogbaru since the number of the victims was increasing on daily basis, pledging to provide NEMA with situation report from Ogbaru on need for more urgent assistance.
Ogochukwu Nwasike, coordinator, Holding Centres in Ogbaru LGA, said that additional Holding Centres had been created in Ogbaru because the existing three centres had been inadequate in coping with growing number of the displaced.
“Now, we have a total of seven centres that include St. James, lyiowa, CPS Odekpe, Local Government Secretariat, Atani, Akili-Ozizor, CPS Ochuche-Umuodu, St. Patricks, Ossomala and Central School Ogwu Ani-Ocha,” the coordinator said.
The deputy governor was received by C.Y. Agupugo, the SEMA secretary, Ogochukwu Nwasike, chief of Staff to the LG Chairman, Nwafili Emezina and counsellors.
However, SEMA was seen at the Holding Centres with relief materials including bags of rice, beans, tomatoes, salt, cartons of milk and tea, gallons of oil, soaps, towels and firewood.
Meanwhile, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, stationed medical teams at the centres as well as mobile tank supplying portable water to the displaced.
