JAM Intervention For Vulnerable Children And Climate Change Initiative (JAM-Initiative), an NGO, on Monday, emphasised the need for stakeholders to redouble efforts toward the fight against dessert encroachment in the country.

The Project Coordinator of the initiative, Ms Toyosi Adenle, made the call while planting a tree at the LEA (Nomadic) Primary School, Tudun-Fulani in Bwari Area Council of the Federal CapitalTerritory (FCT).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tree planting was part of activities of the NGO to commemorate the 2022 International Day of the Girl-Child.

Adenle said that the need to fight desert encroachment in the country couldn’t be overemphasised as the climate was fast changing.

She lamented the devastating effects of environmental degredation which was manifesting with the destruction of the environment such as the raging floods in many states of the federation.

She warned that the negative effects of environmental degredation could only be imagined and all hands must be on deck if any meaningful results must be achieved in time to save humanity from impending disaster.

The Head-Teacher of the primary school, Malam Isah Mohammed, thanked the NGO for choosing to ‘beautify’ the school environment by planting trees.

He urged parents to desist from sending their female children into early marriage.

He said “we are against the practice of getting our young underage girls to marry. I want parents to send their wards to school to seek knowledge. After knowledge acquisition, they can marry anytime.

“By doing so, they can get appointment while in their husband’s house so that it can help them to take care of their children, which will be of help to the husband too.”

The Headboy of the school, Danladi Abednego, assured that he would mobilise his colleagues to take responsibility of watering the plants to maturity on daily basis until they are fully grown.

Similarly, Faith Ateigba, a Primary Five Pupil of the same school promised to water the plants and take care of them. (NAN)
