AMID escalating intimidation against investigative journalists in Nigeria, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has issued a scathing rebuke against the government’s perceived lack of commitment to combating corruption. The recent targeting of Fisayo Soyombo, an

esteemed journalist renowned for groundbreaking exposés on corruption within the Nigerian Customs Service, has raised serious concerns about press freedom and whistleblower protection.

In a strong statement, HURIWA demanded the disbandment of anti-graft agencies if the government fails to demonstrate genuine commitment to fighting corruption. Directed at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the call underscores mounting concerns over the government’s resolve to effectively combat corruption.

HURIWA expressed dismay over reports suggesting that Soyombo is being targeted by elements within the government for his courageous exposés, emphasizing the grave threat this poses to press freedom and democratic principles.

Commending Soyombo’s dedication to exposing corruption, HURIWA highlighted his fearless approach in naming individuals involved, regardless of their status. The organization stressed that Soyombo’s investigations shed light on systemic corruption within the Nigerian Customs Service.

“Soyombo’s uncompromising approach to investigative journalism has unearthed high-level corruption within the Nigerian Customs Service, implicating influential figures, including a smuggler allegedly linked to President Tinubu. Despite the vital role played by investigative journalists in exposing corruption and holding the powerful to account, they face increasing danger and persecution.”

Amid these troubling developments, HURIWA called for decisive action, transparency, accountability, and the protection of journalists like Soyombo who risk their lives to expose corruption. The organization asserted that if the current administration, under President Tinubu, is not genuinely interested in combating corruption, then the disbandment of anti-graft agencies should be considered.

In response to recent developments, HURIWA condemned the recent dismissal of a top prosecutor by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) amidst allegations of bribery and sabotage in the Malabu OPL 245 fraud trial. The dismissal raised serious questions about the integrity of the EFCC and its ability to prosecute high-profile corruption cases effectively, according to HURIWA.

Calling for a thorough investigation into the allegations of bribery and sabotage in the Malabu OPL 245 fraud trial, HURIWA emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the EFCC’s operations to ensure impartial justice. The organization urged the government to support independent investigations and hold perpetrators accountable.

“The dismissal of the prosecutor has raised serious questions about the integrity of the EFCC and its ability to effectively prosecute high-profile corruption cases. We express concern that the dismissal may signal a broader pattern of corruption and impunity within the agency, undermining public confidence in its ability to combat graft.

“Also, it underscores the urgent need for reforms within the EFCC to strengthen its capacity to tackle corruption effectively.  We call on the government to demonstrate its commitment to fighting corruption by supporting independent investigations and holding perpetrators accountable,” HURIWA emphasized.

HURIWA also highlighted the case of Godswill Akpabio, former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and now Senate President, who was reportedly detained by the EFCC for allegedly attempting to bribe the former Chairman of the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa. The organization criticized the pattern of stalled investigations and compromised prosecutions involving former governors, which undermines public confidence in the government’s commitment to tackling corruption.

Furthermore, HURIWA underscored the insidious impact of corruption on Nigeria’s socio-economic fabric, stating that corruption perpetuates poverty, exacerbates inequality, and hampers economic growth and development. The organization emphasized that corruption undermines national security efforts, weakening the government’s ability to combat terrorism and banditry effectively.

“According to reports, Akpabio was trying to bribe the EFCC Chairman because of the tons of corruption allegations against him, dating back to the time he was governor of Akwa Ibom State. This pattern of stalled investigations and compromised prosecutions undermines public confidence in the government’s commitment to tackling corruption.

“The diversion of public funds into private pockets deprives citizens of essential services and exacerbates inequality. The prevalence of corruption hampers economic growth and development, perpetuating cycles of poverty and deprivation.

“Corruption undermines national security efforts, impeding the government’s ability to combat terrorism and banditry effectively. The diversion of resources meant for security initiatives weakens the capacity of the military and law enforcement agencies to tackle emerging threats. Inadequate funding and resources due to corruption contribute to the persistence of insecurity in various parts of the country, threatening the safety and well-being of citizens.

“Continued interference in anti-corruption efforts and the appointment of compromised individuals to key positions only perpetuate impunity and erode trust in governance”, ”, HURIWA emphasized

HURIWA concluded by emphasizing that Nigeria’s future hinges on its ability to root out corruption and ensure accountability at all levels of government, urging the government to take decisive action against corruption.
